Doctoral Program: Dos and Don'ts
Jul 20, 2022

Achieving a Doctor of Business Administration program is one of the biggest achievements possible for anyone. You not only earn a full-time academic position in business administration, but you also acquire advanced organizational skills, managerial skills, improved leadership qualities, and decision-making skills. But before applying for doctoral programs like DBA, it is crucial to know its dos and don’ts to figure out whether it is the right choice for you.

Do your research before applying

Being a DBA student is not the same as being an undergraduate student. It requires immense hard work, a smart mind, and dedication to research. If you have that curiosity to learn insights about business and your impulse is always fueled up with questions like “why”, “how” and “what ifs” then this is the best course for you. Curiosity is needed for the capstone project which is a doctoral study that focuses on examining a real business problem. In this program, you can choose two options - program evaluation or quantitative secondary data analysis. This is the reason why if you are curious then the better you will learn and complete your course.

Don’t procrastinate with your write-ups:

You should never procrastinate when it comes to finishing your write-up before the deadline. Even if you do your research, and think you can complete it within months, it’s probably going to take a lot. Writing a research paper is one of the hardest parts of a Doctor of Business Administration program. Start researching the minute you get your topic. Procrastination is not going to help you, in fact, will double your work.

Do choose your university/supervisor wisely:

The university and the supervisor you choose impact the quality of your course. They will make or break your entire journey. Don’t go forward with choosing your DBA supervisor because he/she is a great leader. Before proceeding with your supervisor, talk to other Doctoral students who are already working in the lab, find out whether they are happy, and get as much information about their personality, attention, and how well they plan their student’s project.

Don’t fritter your initial days:

You might wonder if you have a lot of time in your hand to complete your Doctor of Business Administration Program, but time runs on quickly. The day you start your course, try sticking to your routine as hard as possible. This is a career-oriented course and should not be taken lightly.

Do reach out to former students:

When something is difficult, or you don’t understand how the work is done, then your seniors are the ones who could help you. If there are other doctorate students in your building that you know or are familiar with, try arranging a regular brunch out with them. You can ask questions about how to do your work, choose your topic, research studies, etc. If that looks tough, you can also try online forums for doctorate students.

Don’t shift from your responsibilities:

Don’t burden others with your work. You shouldn't leave everything to your supervisor about what to choose, how to choose the topic, what to read, what to learn, and how to plan your project. This is your course, and you must learn because when you go out there in the world and be in such a position to handle everything, it is you who is going to be responsible for your work. So, get involved in every project and take your responsibilities beforehand.
